A pluralistic society is characterized by a tolerance of divergent opinions and philosophies of life - a trait which is reflected in a variety of social institutions. These institutions have obviously been set into change by a growing loss of the basic unity of religion and ideology. In many areas of society, the contemporary question of ethics is not only concerned with the application of generally accepted values to new situations, but with a justification of the obligatory nature of inherited values as well.
